Executive Director Brett Bittner Speaks Out About Marriage Equality

Last week, President Obama announced an “evolution” of his position on marriage equality.  As you can imagine, Libertarians were less than enthused.

I sought to share a Libertarian voice in the conversation, reaching out to The GA Voice, where they published this statement on their blog:

For each individual, marriage means something different. For some, it is a lifetime commitment between two people. For others, it is the beginning of a family. For others still, it is a unity between two people and their Creator. Whatever the reason for marriage, it is an undertaking for which there should be equality under the law. [Read more...]

Locals Go To Libertarian National Convention In Las Vegas

One of our delegates to the Libertarian National Convention in Las Vegas last week, and a volunteer for the Jonathan Smith for State House 154 race, Jessica Polk, provided this recap of the Presidential nominating convention to us, as well as the local media in Southwest Georgia.

Jonathan Smith, native of Donalsonville, who is running for State Representative for District 154, attended the Libertarian National Convention this past weekend where Gary Johnson
was nominated for the 2012 Libertarian Presidential Candidate. Accompanying Smith to the convention was 2010 Georgia gubernatorial candidate John Monds, a Cairo resident. Monds is best-known for holding the record for most votes by any Libertarian in any election in his 2008 race for Public Service Commission. Both Smith and Monds are active in the Libertarian Party of Georgia, as well as avid advocates for civil liberties, smaller government and strict fiscal responsibility that make up the Libertarian platform. Monds committed to assist with Smith’s campaign for State Representative. He also works at the state and local levels to develop Libertarian leadership. [Read more...]

Libertarian National Convention Nominates Gary Johnson for President

LAS VEGAS – The Libertarian Party nominated former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson for President of the United States, expressing confidence he will be able to find effective small-government solutions to the country’s most pressing problems and mount a strong challenge to his major party rivals.

Mr. Johnson was declared the party’s Presidential nominee after he won 70% percent of the vote in the first round of balloting by the 595 delegates of the

National Libertarian Convention held at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, NV. His closest challenger, R. Lee Wrights of Texas, finished second with 25% of the ballots.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Johnson promised to present a clear and viable alternative to major party candidates, saying his victory in November will offer Americans effective solutions to slow economic growth, high unemployment and endless foreign military commitments that sap the country’s financial strengths. America, for the first time in modern history, is poised to reject the tired two-party duopoly that has brought the nation to its knees economically.

“I am honored and I just want to pledge that no one will be disappointed. We’re going to grow the Libertarian Party.” said Mr. Johnson. [Read more...]

Libertarians Blast Budget, Ask “A Billion Dollar Increase is Limited Government?”

With an end to the legislative session in sight, legislators from both houses of the General Assembly confer over the differing budget proposals passed by each. Currently, lawmakers anticipate a cost to taxpayers of $19.3 billion. With that price tag, Libertarians question the fiscal sanity of a budget that grew beyond a combination of the rate of inflation and population growth estimates.

“A five percent increase over last year is hardly fiscally conservative,” says Libertarian Party of Georgia Executive Director Brett Bittner. “Republicans have once again hoodwinked advocates of limited government in this state. The promises made on the campaign trail to cut the size of state government are distant memories as they grow the size of government faster than inflation and the estimated population growth.”

Libertarians Oppose Denial of College Education Opportunities

Nearing the end of the 2011-2012 legislative session, Georgia’s lawmakers consider a bill which would deny to undocumented persons access to post-secondary education, codifying an existing Board of Regents policy. Available on the Georgia General Assembly’s website is the full text of the bill.

“This bill panders to a particular and currently politically popular constituency of voters,” said Crystal Gross, Operations Director for the Libertarian Party of Georgia. “Restraining the possibilities for the children of individuals who made a choice to break a law. This bill is an overreach by the legislature to dictate education policy to the state Board of Regents and threatens the very foundation of the American way of life — education, innovation, and prosperity.”
