This page is published for the purpose of keeping Middle Georgia Voter Choice volunteers up-to-date about what is currently happening with the act during this legislative session, and what you can do to help.  It will be updated as soon as new information becomes available.

We held a meeting on Tuesday, January 23.  Hugh Esco and Kerrie Dickson of the GA Green Party and Helmut Forren of the GA Libertarian Party were on hand to lend their expertise and knowledge.  We will be issuing press releases, starting telephone trees, sending out mailers, and passing out flyers over the next couple of weeks.  Your help is crucial to the success of our endeavor.

What you can do to help:

HB-188 is now in sub-committee.  Stay tuned for next lobby activity at the capitol.

Join us in our lobbying efforts.  For more information, contact Helmut Forren. -Note: Committee meeting was cancelled at last minute.

Tuesday 1/30 scheduled at 1:30pm in either room 230 or 416, the Governmental Affairs Committee will be meeting.  Rumors are going around that an amendment will attempted.  We don't know at this time if it will be a friendly or a hostile amendment. Discussion of the bill during this meeting is assured by the chair and bill co-sponsor Dr. Holmes.  This meeting should really happen and not be cancelled; of course there are never any guarantees.

We really need a large number of warm bodies quietly sitting in the room during this meeting, as well as being present and politely conversational before the meeting, in order to insure that all the committee members -- especially those who might consider opposing or damaging the bill -- remain aware that we are still working actively and in force to promote this legislation.

If you can get off work (again!) and make it, please try to get there around 1pm or so.  The meeting should not last past 3pm.

--Lobbying--

Note also, that many of us will, once again (and including me this time) be lobbying during the House session from 10am to noon, and then eating at the Sloppy Floyd cafeteria afterward.  To participate in this lobbying as well, meet other folks wearing Voter Choice buttons (with the red/white "no choice" map) on the third floor near the pedestal for writing notes to representatives, on the House side of the Capitol.

--Parking--

OK.  Parking is only $3 at my favorite place.  Heading south on the connector, exit Martin Luther King, Jr. / State Capitol.  Take the first (immediate) right onto Butler street.  Prior to the first light, turn into the public parking deck, which is the second deck.  Take the elevator to the 5th floor for the bridge to the other parking deck.  Take the elevator (stairs quicker) down to the 3rd floor for the bridge over to the Sloppy Floyd building.  Inside the Sloppy Floyd building, continue just past the elevators and then bare left toward the front of the building.  Exiting the front of the building, and see the Capitol, your destination!

--Committee Meeting Thursday 2/19--

The next regular scheduled meeting of the Governmental Affairs Committee will be at the same time and place on Thursday.  The bill scheduled to have been "heard" on Tuesday, it is scheduled to be voted upon in this Thursday meeting.  Again, we will need folks there to make sure the legislators either vote "Y" or (as they're want to do in the "N" case) abstain from the meeting.  We'll be lobbying that morning as well.

--Thanks--
